( This is pure fiction) it is
about a childhood friend jun who went underground
and did not come back
when her mother died he was not in the wake
they waited
until they buried her
it is the belief of the village that a monster ate jun
in that mountain
by now he must be 53 if indeed he were alive
we went to elementary school together
and every afternoon as we walked towards home we stole some sugar canes
and often because of these repeated misdeeds
we were always beaten
in the house where we live
we always remember the screams of
school children
and if jun were
alive today
perhaps he would compose
the same poem about
the bitterness of sugarcane.
